Joshua Tew is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In addition to his studies in Music, he completed minors in Sacred Music and Sociology. He serves as the Band and Chorus Director at Midway High School. A versatile music educator and performer, Mr. Tew's primary instrument is tuba, and he is also proficient on piano.
Throughout his career, Mr. Tew has taught band, chorus, and general music in both public and private school settings, working with students of all ages. Prior to his current full-time position at Midway High School, he also served as the Band Director and General Music Teacher at Midway Middle School as an itinerant teacher. He also maintains a private studio, offering piano and wind instrument instruction at Dunn School of Music.
Mr. Tew was honored as Midway High School's Teacher of the Year for the 2015–2016 school year and has received Teacher of the Month recognition on multiple occasions. Under his direction, Midway High School ensembles have consistently received Superior ratings at contests and festivals. He is frequently invited to conduct honor band and choir clinics and has served as an adjudicator for talent shows, pageants, and marching band competitions. In 2019, he was selected by his peers to serve as the clinician for the Southeastern District 9th–10th Grade All-District Band. In 2026, he was again recognized by his peers as the recipient of the Southeastern District Band Directors Association Award of Excellence.
An active leader in music education, Mr. Tew is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the Southeastern District Band Directors Association, where he serves on the Board of Directors. He also serves as chair and host of the district's Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Adjudication event. Mr. Tew is the North Carolina representative on the Board of the Rural Band Directors Alliance. In the fall of 2025, Mr. Tew and colleague Jesse Shelton presented a session at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference titled "Rural Doesn't Mean Small! Strategies for Recruiting and Developing Healthy School Music Programs."
A proud graduate of Midway Middle School and Midway High School, Mr. Tew is passionate about giving back to the community that helped shape him. Outside of his teaching responsibilities, he enjoys arranging and composing music for publication, with his works available at www.jtewmusic.com. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Corrie, his cat, Dolly, and his flock of chickens. He is a lifelong NASCAR fan and enjoys following the sport.
